Come on Ian, pick up, thought Cray impatiently.
The operator came back on.
“The other party accepted the charges. You may proceed with your call.”
“Ian?”
“Yeah buddy, I’m here.”
“I’m a little off the reservation at the moment with the job and wanted some advice.”
“What’s going on?”
“Corporate war games, but playing for real. There are moles in Silver Label feeding info to the red team. No idea who I can trust.”
“It’s whoever wants you to get the delivery done. They are a good bet to trust. If they just want to control you somehow, monitoring, guiding, whatever, they are probably bad operators or being directed by one.”
“O.K., that’s clear enough to follow. So you think I have the real load, not a decoy?”
“These folks are so deep into deception I don’t think there is a difference. All decoys and no decoys. In the end, completing the trip is the prize.”
“So that’s what you meant in you message.”
“Yep, getting the load in hand is probably not the primary goal. The real goal is making the journey. They may be selling security services.”
“This is so above my pay grade. Bottom line, you think I should just finish the delivery.”
“If you can do it safely. No rushing machine gun nests or anything.”
“I can handle that.”
