Chapter 11 A Real Plan
Jim rebuilds, earnest but unhurried. Avoiding impulses and inflammatory reactions.
He returns to a conventional workday, still arriving early, enough to beat the rush hour, but not ridiculously so. He is non-confrontational with his bosses and coworkers, managing his expectations of himself and others.
He attends Group, cognizant that the councilors are doing the best they can with what they have. His participation is both for himself and others in the group.
Jim sets boundaries with gaming, knowing gaming isn’t evil, he was weak, and transferred his ill into playing.
He starts writing honestly about things in his life. Branching into new genres and new styles. Samuel believes Jim has a knack for it, especially when he is being real. Writing isn’t salvation but a good form of expression.
Jim shows up to Marge’s class, regularly. He doesn’t take to it as quickly as writing but he remains steady. He is in no rush knowing art isn’t therapy, but they dance well together.
At the most fundamental level he learns none of the trident points work alone. Life is too vast to be taken so narrowly.
Recovery wasn’t a hill. It was a circle. And he was finally learning how to walk it without running.

Nice! Once the line is crossed, the trick is to understand first and foremost that addiction is permanent, whether or not the addict uses or games or whatever. There is a period of time, often years when one day at a time has to be enough because the idea of a lifetime of abstinence is too big and too depressing to deal with. And yeah, writing is an addiction, but hopefully a healthy one like breathing.
